HASTINGS, Mich. (WOOD) - Wednesday, 6.5 million homes and businesses remained without electricity due to the fury of Superstorm Sandy, which swept over the East Coast Monday. One Hastings company is working hard to help ease that situation.
Employees at Hastings Fiberglass Products have been working around the clock since last Friday, trying to get equipment to the East Coast to get the power turned back on.
"What typically happens in storms like these is you have about a five to 10 day window to get equipment out the door to help them," Hastings Fiberglass Products President David Baum explained.
As the flood of utility workers begins to pour into areas ravaged by Sandy to restore power, some of the products they will need are still being manufactured.
Hastings Fiberglass Products's biggest seller is grounding cable that protects technicians from electrocution. Orders are coming in so quickly that all 75 employees are working extra shifts.
"We have moved people out of our sales office out here, we have our operations manager, we even have the CEO of the company out here," said David Baum.
Third-generation president David Baum said his company's small size and culture allows a quick response in emergency situations.
Generation number two is Larry Baum. Even though he's the CEO, he has been temporarily assigned to a machine. For him, it's all about the employees.
"They really care about the business and they really care about the customer and it makes you want to get out here and help them," said Larry Baum. "They really feel like they are contributing and helping out a desperate situation."
Larry Baum said his company has never seen this kind of a rush before, but he can already see it coming to an end.
"Every day, we are working 24 hours and we think we have them taken care of, and before the 24 hours is up, they call and say they want to double the order," he said. "It's gotten to the point where we are going to run completely out of material."
More cable was rushed in, but other parts are harder to come by. Eventually, the company will not be able to get materials in time to take advantage of the increased demand and it will be back to business as usual.
